What is Breast Augmentation?
Today, breast augmentation surgery, or breast enhancement surgery, is one of the most common plastic surgeries performed. Performed in an accredited surgical center under general anesthesia, breast enhancement surgery increases or restores the size of the breasts, as well as improves the shape and projection of the breasts. There are now more options than ever before, making breast augmentation a safe and natural choice to upgrade your appearance. Breast implant options include saline breast implants, silicone breast implants, or autologous fat transfer, a natural breast augmentation method that uses your own fat introduced to your natural breast tissue. If you choose implants, Dr. Hamwi will help you decide between saline and silicone breast implants.

What Can I Expect During a Sarasota Breast Augmentation Procedure?
After you arrive approximately an hour before your scheduled surgery, you will meet with Dr. Hamwi and your anesthesia provider.
Once you are safely anesthetized, Dr. Hamwi will begin your breast augmentation surgery as determined during your consultation.
Dr. Hamwi will make an incision in your breast tissue, then lift the tissue to create a pocket for the implant. Depending on factors determined during your consultation, this pocket may be underneath the pectoral muscle or on top of it. After the implant is safely inserted and positioned, your incisions will be carefully sutured, and you’ll be dressed in compression garments.
For autologous fat transfer procedures, you will also undergo liposuction from an area of your body, such as the abdomen or thighs. This fat is then processed before being reinserted into your breasts.
How Soon Will I See My Breast Augmentation Results?
You’ll see results immediately following treatment; however, you may experience swelling that disguises the true results for a few weeks. Some side effects may also include mild bruising at the treatment site. You’ll continue to see your results improve as your body heals over the next few months.
At Florida Plastic Surgery, Dr. Hamwi prefers rapid recovery breast augmentation. With an optimal choice of breast implants and improved post-operative procedures, the traditional pain and recovery time associated with breast augmentation is reduced. This means you get back to your daily routine faster.
As Dr. Hamwi is dedicated to his breast augmentation patients, he will educate you on ways to maintain your results or recommend other procedures to enhance them.

Sarasota, FL, Breast Augmentation Procedures FAQs
The size and shape of the breast implant is based on 3 main considerations.
- what size and look do you want to have
- what size is your natural breast and the frame of your body
- how elastic the skin is and how it will support the implant
At your consultation these things will be discussed and we will determine a range of sizes for you to choose from. We also have breast sizers that you can try on that will give you a sense of how an implant will look on your body.
Due to each individual’s needs and aesthetic goals, breast augmentation procedures are highly customizable. The cost of your treatment will vary based on the procedure. During your consultation, Dr. Hamwi will provide an estimate for a more accurate breast augmentation cost in Sarasota, FL.
Now a days there are a variety of implants. the two most basic categories are Silicone and Saline implants. Within these groups silicone implants have a range of cohesivity levels. How cohesive the implant is affects how well it keeps its shape and how soft it is. The more cohesive the implant is, the more upper pole volume an implant will have, the less cohesive the implant is the softer it will feel. Saline implants tend to feel less natural outside of the body but if the implant is placed under the muscle or the patient has moderate breast tissue of her own you may not be able to tell the difference. The reason that patients often choose saline implants is that they can be inserted through a smaller incision.
When breast implants are placed the breasts still tend to keep some of their natural features. Breast implants tend to create some of their own shape and position but if your breasts are naturally a little farther apart then it is likely that your results with implants will still be a little farther apart. The same is true for nipple position and where your breasts sit on your chest.
The no touch technique is a method of performing a breast augmentation where the implant is never handled by anyone including the surgeon. The implant is poured from its sterile packaging into a Keller funnel and then inserted into the breast pocket with the funnel. By reducing the contact the implant has the contamination risk is reduced.
During your Breast Augmentation procedure, you will be anesthetized and given pain medication to take in the following days. Be sure to address your pain concerns with Dr. Hamwi during your consultation.
In addition to breast augmentation, Dr. Hamwi is also an expert in breast lift, breast reduction, breast lift with implants, endoscopic breast augmentation, and other cosmetic breast surgery procedures. You can learn more about each procedure by viewing their pages or scheduling a consultation with Dr. Hamwi.
The most important feature that will determine if a breast lift is necessary is the position of the nipples. The fold under the breast where the breast meets the chest wall is called the inframammary fold (IMF). If the nipple is at the level of this fold or above it, you don’t need a lift. If your nipples are below this level a lift may be a good idea.
Using a Keller funnel is one way to reduce the risks associated with silicone breast augmentation and give you the best possible chance of a great recovery. The less a breast implant is handled the less chance there is of contamination from bacteria and the less possible damage to the implant as it is being inserted. Because the funnel improves the ease at which the implant is placed it sometimes can mean that a smaller incision can be made to insert a silicone breast implant.
It is good to have an idea of what approximate size you want your breast to be. You may want to look for pictures of women in bathing suits or bras that have the approximate breast size you are looking to achieve. When doing this, it is best to find women that have a similar body size and shape as yours.
If you have breast sagging called ptosis you may need a breast lift. In these situations an internal bra procedure may be beneficial as well.
Temporary changes in nipple sensation after a breast augmentation is relatively common but permanent loss of sensation is not. If this is a particular concern to you then you should carefully consider the operation. Things that can influence the chances of sensory changes are larger implants and using electrocautery near the location of the nerve. Doctor Hamwi uses a technique that minimizes trauma to the area where the nerve is located.
It depends on what kind of work you do. I typically recommend that patients who have a desk job take 3-4 days off to see how they feel. If your job is more strenuous you may want to take a week. If your job is strenuous it may be necessary to modify your work duties so that you can heal.
We have come a long way from the recovery techniques of the past. Now we have rapid recovery protocols which will reduce the amount of pain after a procedure and get you back to normal activity in just a couple days. That being said, Strenuous physical activity should be avoided for 6 weeks in most cases.
Dr. Hamwi is one of the top breast implant surgeons in the country. He will use his vast training and experience to help guide you through all aspects of the procedure. Dr. Hamwi uses specialized techniques to get the best possible results and reduce risks associated with the surgery. Dr. Hamwi is one of the only doctors in the region that performs an endoscopic breast augmentation to precisely place an implant through the armpit so that there are no scars on the breast.
Dr. Hamwi’s philosophy on breast augmentation is that it should complement your natural body shape. We want to help you choose an option that not only makes you look great now but will look good for years to come while minimizing some of the inherent risks of surgery.
When you are choosing a breast augmentation surgeon you want to make sure that the surgeon is a board certified plastic surgeon with the experience and training to get you the best possible results. You want to make sure that they take the time to understand your goals and explain all of the potential risks and benefits. Ultimately you want to choose someone that has your best interests in mind and that you trust.
Placing a breast implant will always leave a scar. Our goal is to minimize the appearance of the scar or place it in a location that will be less visible. The 3 main locations for breast implant scars are
- in the fold under the breast called the IMF (Infra-Mammary Fold)
- through the nipple called the periareolar incision
- Through the armpit called the transaxillary incision. Dr. Hamwi performs a very specialized technique for transaxillary augmentation where he uses a camera to very precisely place the implants. This technique also keeps all scars off of the breast completely so there’s very little evidence that any work was done.
It is very common for your breasts to feel tight and sore after surgery and for some time afterwards. While strenuous physical activity should be avoided, current thinking about this surgery actually encourages light activity to aid in the recovery. This is called a Rapid Recovery Protocol and you surgeon will tell you exactly how to do this after your surgery.
Mammograms are an important part of breast health and should be continued after a breast augmentation. You should let your primary care provider know that you have had a breast augmentation as it may change the type of breast imaging that they perform. It is recommended that in addition to regular mammograms an MRI is done at certain intervals to check the implant and the surrounding breast.
No, all of the sutures that are placed during a breast augmentation surgery will dissolve on their own.
While breast implants are designed to be durable they are not indestructible and breaks in the implant shell are possible. How this presents depends mostly on what the implant is filled with. If it is a saline implant rupture then one would notice that the breast would shrink over a couple of day period. If the implant is made of silicone then an MRI may be the only way to tell if the implant has been damaged. In either case, damaged silicone or saline implants need to be replaced.
