What Can I Expect During a Dermal Filler Procedure?
While each dermal filler procedure will be unique, our MedSpa experts customize procedures to achieve optimal results for each patient. Here are some general steps to expect. Our highly trained and experienced injector, Sia (PA-C), performs all dermal filler procedures. She is highly knowledgeable and provides an individualized approach to her patients.
Preparing for Your Dermal Filler Procedure
For about a week prior to your procedure, you should stop taking medications that contain aspirin and most herbal supplements, especially those containing vitamin E, garlic, ginger, turmeric, fish oil, or zinc, as these can cause bleeding or bruising. For 24 to 48 hours prior to your filler treatment, you should avoid alcohol.
For at least 48 hours prior to and following your dermal filler procedure, avoid smoking, vaping, or any other nicotine products. Nicotine constricts blood vessels and affects the body’s ability to heal itself, potentially impacting your recovery and results. Smoking or other nicotine products can shorten the longevity of your filler results and increase the risk of infection.
Dermal Filler Procedure
Injectable procedures are typically quick and relatively painless, with most patients reporting only minimal discomfort. Topical numbing solutions are available upon request. Depending on the number of treatment areas, your dermal filler procedure may last from 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Dermal Filler Aftercare
Dermal fillers require minimal downtime. Patients can resume most normal activities immediately following treatment. Common side effects include swelling, mild redness, and bruising which may occur at the injection site. However, these effects resolve within 2 weeks.
To ensure optimal results from your dermal filler treatment, it’s essential to follow all post-procedural instructions thoroughly, including:
- Apply an ice pack to the treatment area—20 minutes on, then 40 minutes off
- Avoid touching or massaging the treated area for two to four hours
- Avoid strenuous exercise for at least 24 hours
- Avoid heat exposure for at least 24 hours
- Avoid excessive salt consumption for at least 24 hours
- Avoid makeup for 24 hours
- Avoid alcohol and smoking for 24 to 48 hours
- Sleep with your head slightly elevated to reduce swelling
- Take Tylenol for discomfort, if needed
- Avoid foods that are hard to chew
