How to Sleep After an Arm Lift

The arms can be a notoriously difficult area to tone, even with a healthy diet and exercise regimen. If the skin doesn’t have adequate elasticity, it won’t be able to resume its previous shape, resulting in sagging or drooping skin in areas like the upper arms. However, an arm lift can help restore the appearance of your arms.

Following an arm lift, rest and sleep are critical to ensure proper healing and optimal results. At Florida Plastic Surgery and Medspa, double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Kristopher Hamwi guides you through all steps of your arm lift recovery, including how to sleep.

What Is an Arm Lift?

An arm lift, also called brachioplasty, is a body-contouring surgery to reshape the upper arms by removing extra skin, tissue, and fat. The results are smoother, slender-looking upper arms with improved muscle tone.

Through an incision on the back or inside of your upper arm, Dr. Hamwi will remove the extra skin, tissue, and fat. Dr. Hamwi may also remove excess tissue from the side of the chest in the underarm area or perform liposuction to provide optimal results. Once the skin is reconnected, results are noticeable immediately.

Sleeping Positions

Following your arm lift, it’s important to allow your body adequate time for rest and sleep. Though getting enough sleep after any plastic surgery is critical to the healing process, it’s often not easy to find a comfortable and appropriate sleeping position. Knowing how to sleep following an arm lift is essential for a healthy recovery and optimal results.

The best position for patients to sleep after arm lift surgery is on their backs in a reclined position rather than on the stomach or the sides. For the first two weeks, patients should keep their arms elevated, with elbows slightly bent on top of a few pillows during sleep. This helps ensure proper fluid drainage and reduces inflammation.

Typically, a recliner would be the best place to sleep for the first few weeks following arm lift surgery. However, if you don’t have a recliner, sleeping on a sofa or using a wedge pillow in bed can also help achieve a comfortable and beneficial position.

Most patients can resume side or stomach sleeping approximately three weeks following surgery.

You should continue wearing compression garments during sleep for the first four weeks following surgery.
