Both men and women can be affected by hair loss or skin concerns, such as dark undereye circles. Often, these issues can intensify due to stress, genetics, medications, hormonal imbalances, and other factors, such as lifestyle choices, and contribute to the signs of aging. Unfortunately, looking older than you are can negatively impact your confidence and self-esteem.
However, Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is a safe and effective treatment that offers successful results for regrowing hair and rejuvenating the skin. PRP has been used for years to improve the body’s ability to heal itself after injury. What Is PRP?
Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is harvested from a patient’s own blood. It consists of the liquid portion of the blood and a specific type of cell called platelets. Platelets are an essential element of our body’s healing capabilities and contain growth factors that encourage cell production and tissue regeneration in the treated areas.
PRP is harvested by taking a small amount of blood from the patient, like the amount you’d typically give for a blood test. This blood is placed into a centrifuge to separate the components of the blood and concentrate the platelet-rich plasma. By concentrating the PRP, it contains three to five times more platelets than circulating blood.
After the PRP is processed, it is then injected into the treatment areas, such as the scalp or tear troughs, to enhance the number of growth factors and encourage cell growth and tissue regeneration.
The treatment poses a low risk, and it typically doesn’t cause major side effects as PRP injections are comprised of your own cells. Specifically, the risk of allergic reaction or rejection is considerably lower than other injectable treatments or rejuvenation procedures.
Following the procedure, it is common to experience soreness or bruising at both the treatment site and the withdrawal site.
PRP for Skin Restoration
Hollowed, dark circles under the eyes can make you look tired, run down, sad, or older than your actual age. We lose fat and volume in the face as we age, causing the tear troughs beneath the eyes, making them look shadowed or hollow. However, dark circles can form under the eyes after weight loss, illness, or lifestyle choices, such as lack of sleep, alcohol, stress, or smoking.
We utilize the combination of PRP therapy with microneedling to further enhance the treatment’s effectiveness. By combining PRP with microneedling, we harness the power of skin restoration and revitalization, resulting in remarkable improvements in:
- Fine lines
- Creases
- Hyperpigmentation
- Redness
- Acne scars
- Sun damage
- Crepey skin
- Skin laxity
- Dull skin
Additionally, for a more refreshed and youthful appearance, PRP can also be combined with dermal fillers, which contributes to the overall rejuvenation of the treated area.
During your complimentary consultation, our experts will determine if PRP injections are the best option to help you achieve your best skin and accomplish your aesthetic goals. Based on your skin’s condition and your desired results, you may see optimal results from a series of three to five PRP injection sessions scheduled four to six weeks apart.
PRP for Hair Restoration
Hair restoration with PRP is a safe and effective way to stimulate hair growth and slow down hair loss. In this procedure, PRP is injected into the areas of the scalp where you desire hair growth. PRP for hair restoration works best in areas where you have experienced recent hair loss, such as male- or female-pattern hair loss.
PRP therapy works by increasing the blood supply to hair follicles. As well as slowing hair loss, encouraging natural hair growth, PRP helps increase hair shaft thickness, making your hair look fuller. Often, PRP therapy is partnered with medications or topical treatments for optimal hair regrowth.
What Is the Difference Between PRP and Exosomes?
PRP is a biological product obtained from a patient’s blood. The process includes drawing blood and spinning it through a centrifuge to separate the plasma. Plasma has a high platelet count, which provides therapeutic properties. These platelets are rich in growth factors that promote wound healing and tissue regrowth.
In contrast, exosomes are microscopic vesicles created by cells and released into the extracellular area. When a cell’s membrane collapses inward, it forms a tiny pocket that transports materials, including waste, messages, and DNA. Since exosomes can transport signals and genetic information between cells, they can also influence the actions and behavior of the recipient cells. These capabilities allow exosomes to provide incredible advancements in regenerative medicine by influencing cells’ behavior in the targeted area.
Where Do PRP and Exosomes Come From?
PRP comes from your blood. As a result, it is 100% biocompatible, with no risk of rejection, allergic reactions, or other adverse effects.
Typical sources of exosomes are blood, fat tissue, bone marrow, and placental tissue. Each has unique regenerative properties and characteristics that make it suitable for either hair or skin restoration.
How Do PRP and Exosomes Work for Skin and Hair Restoration?
PRP is primarily for tissue regeneration. Growth factors in platelets accelerate your body’s natural ability to regenerate and repair damaged tissues and heal wounds.
Exosomes have multiple uses beyond wound healing and tissue regeneration. They regulate the function of recipient cells by transferring signals and genetic information. With this ability, exosomes can treat conditions from signs of aging and aching joints to hair regrowth.
Additionally, exosomes can stimulate collagen formation and cell renewal. With their anti-inflammatory and regenerative properties, they have become a reliable aesthetic tool for restoring your youthful appearance.
Am I a Good Candidate for PRP?
Generally, good candidates for PRP injections for hair restoration or skin rejuvenation treatments are men and women who are looking to enhance their appearance and boost their confidence with minimally invasive aesthetic treatments.
PRP candidates should:
- Be non-smokers, or willing to quit prior to beginning treatment
- Live a healthy lifestyle, including an exercise program and healthy diet
- Understand the risks of the treatment
- Have a positive outlook and realistic goals
- Be prepared to closely follow instructions
Patients who are not candidates for PRP include those who:
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have platelet disorders
- Are on medications that inhibit platelet function
- Take blood thinners
- Are heavy smokers
- Have history of alcohol or drug misuse
Preparing for Your Florida PRP Treatment
At Florida Plastic Surgery, Dr. Hamwi and his team customize every PRP therapy treatment to best suit the needs of each patient. Here are some general steps to expect.
Once you have been greeted by our team, you will be evaluated by our injection specialists. We will ensure you are comfortable and answer any last minute questions before beginning your PRP procedure.
Depending upon your procedure, a topical numbing agent may be applied to your skin that takes 30 minutes to activate.
First, your PRP provider will draw your blood like they would for any blood test. Then, they’ll separate the platelet-rich plasma from the rest of the blood with a centrifuge. After your blood has been processed, your provider will begin injecting the PRP into the treatment areas.
Typically, the process takes between 45 to 60 minutes.
If you are having any other skincare treatments simultaneously, you may have other procedural instructions.
You may experience some soreness or tenderness at the injection site for a few days following your PRP therapy treatment. Typically, these effects only last a few days and will resolve on their own. Depending on your PRP injection site or accompanying treatments, you may have other aftercare requirements.
PRP injection therapy typically consists of a series of three to five treatments scheduled four to six weeks apart with results four to six weeks after the last treatment.
Following PRP for hair restoration, patients can immediately resume most normal activities. However, here are some activities that you should postpone for at least a few hours:
- Refrain from touching the treatment site for at least eight hours
- Don’t wet hair or use hair products for at least six hours
- Avoid saunas, steam rooms, or swimming for at least two days
- No alcohol, caffeine, and cigarettes for at least three days
- No NSAID medications for at least two weeks
Your Sarasota PRP Results
PRP injection therapy for skin rejuvenation and hair restoration works from the inside out. Therefore, you will not see results immediately after your first treatment. Instead, patients typically begin seeing improvements in their skin’s appearance and new hair growth within four to six weeks after their last PRP injection treatment.
As with any aesthetic treatment, following instructions regarding avoiding sun exposure, cleansing the skin, and avoiding physical activities is fundamental to ensuring your optimal results from PRP injections.
