Does the Weather Affect Your Hair Transplants?

Can the heat of summer or the cold temperatures of winter affect my hair transplants?

While the weather doesn’t necessarily impact hair transplants, it certainly brings up some interesting questions about the best time of year to schedule your hair transplant. Aspects like perspiration or keeping your freshly shaved head warm are certainly worth considering before scheduling your hair restoration procedure.

At Florida Plastic Surgery and Medspa, double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Kristopher Hamwi hears questions like these often. No matter what the weather’s like outside, we want to help you schedule your hair transplant at the best time to suit your lifestyle.

Don’t Sweat the Heat

Whether you’re working out or having fun in the Florida sun, heat makes most people sweat. So, how does perspiration affect your hair restoration results?

Following the first two weeks after your procedure, it’s essential to keep the area clean and protected. While we’ll teach you how to gently rinse your scalp with clean water a few times per day, you’ll need to wait several days before resuming your regular shampoo process.

While sweating will not drastically affect your hair restoration results, sweat makes it quite difficult to keep your scalp clean. To protect your scalp from excess perspiration and increased blood pressure, you will need to put your strenuous fitness activities and outdoor excursions on hold for a few weeks. After the first week, you can wear a soft hat if you need to be outdoors, and don’t forget to liberally apply sunscreen.

Cold Weather Benefits

Cooler weather can often reduce excess perspiration, making at least this aspect of hair restoration recovery less uncomfortable. But can freezing temperatures negatively affect a hair transplant? The short answer is no.

After the first 7 to 10 days of recovery, a soft knit hat may be a good idea to protect you from the elements and keep you comfortable. However, it is imperative that you do not place anything constrictive or hard upon your head for a few weeks. If you do need to brave cooler temperatures during those first days, wear a loose-fitting hoody shirt to protect your grafts.

Staying inside during the colder weather or covering up with a soft hat also offers the perfect excuse to help maintain your privacy.

Your Lifestyle & Ideal Timing

Most importantly, schedule your hair restoration surgery at a time that is convenient for you to relax and lay low for a little while. For about a week, you’ll need to take off work and avoid exercising and sweating and putting direct pressure on your head. Choose a time of year that allows you to rest and recover from your hair transplant in peace.
