Hair Transplants in Sarasota with Dr. Kristopher Hamwi

We all do what we can to maintain a young and healthy feeling. However, some aspects of aging, such as hair loss (female and male pattern baldness), can make us feel entirely powerless. Besides making us look older than we feel, hair loss can contribute to low self-esteem, stress, anxiety, and depression.

Fortunately, there are methods to diminish the signs of hair loss. Hair transplants have greatly improved and are more successful and effective than over-the-counter products. Many hair restoration patients experience 10 to 80 percent regrowth in just three to four months. However, partnering with an expert is crucial in finding the results you want.

What are Hair Transplants?

By simple explanation, hair transplants are a restoration method that moves hair from one area of the head or body to the regions of your scalp with balding or thinning hair. Experts like Dr. Hamwi meticulously graft each individual hair follicle to the scalp to revitalize a full head of hair.

Physicians have been transplanting hair since 1939 and have been updating techniques since then. To minimalize the appearance of transplanted hairs, physicians now use mini- and micro-grafts.

What are the Benefits of Hair Transplants?

Across the world, more than half of men and women experience a form of hair loss. Many people turn to less-effective over-the-counter products to combat this hair loss. However, hair transplants are typically more successful than such products. With hair transplants, the benefits are long-lasting; however, hair loss may continue naturally over time.

With fuller hair, you’ll enjoy a more youthful appearance and significantly increased confidence.

What Options for Hair Transplants in Sarasota, FL Can I Choose From?

There are two methods used in hair transplanting: Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). The difference is how the hair follicles are harvested.

FUT Hair Restoration

In FUT, a small strip of your scalp, usually six to ten inches, is removed by scalpel from the back of your head. The harvest site is then closed with stitches. This strip of scalp is divided into small pieces called grafts.

FUE Hair Restoration

In FUE, the back of your head is shaved. Individual hair follicles are then harvested from the scalp. If a scar develops it will likely be a tiny dot.

Dr. Hamwi will make small holes in your scalp where the hair will be transplanted, then insert the hairs into the holes. The surgical site is then dressed.

What Can I Expect During a Hair Transplant Procedure?

While your treatment will be unique to the plan you and Dr. Hamwi have constructed, you can expect some general steps to transpire:

  1. You’ll meet with Dr. Hamwi approximately an hour before surgery.
  2. Dr. Hamwi will sterilize and numb the area where hair will be removed.
  3. Once you are safely anesthetized, Dr. Hamwi will begin your hair transplant as determined during your consultation.
  4. Dr. Hamwi will either remove a strip of your scalp to harvest healthy hair follicles or shave the back of your head.
  5. At this point, either the strip of your scalp will be reduced into smaller sections for placement into your scalp where the hair is thinning, or individual hair follicles will be removed from the shaved section of your head.
  6. These sections and individual follicles will be grafted into small, individual holes placed into your scalp.
  7. Your wounds will be bandaged.

What Can I Expect After My Transplantation?

After your hair transplant procedure, your scalp may be swollen and tender. Dr. Hamwi may require you to wear bandages and prescribe pain medications, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, or hair-growth stimulants. Dr. Hamwi may also suggest that you:

Wait a few days after the procedure to wash your hair.

  • Use mild shampoos for a few weeks.
  • Avoid brushes or combs on the graft areas for three weeks.
  • Avoid hats or pullover shirts and jackets.
  • Avoid exercise until healed.

Most people may return to normal activities within three days following the procedure.

When Will I See My Hair Transplant Results?

Within two to three weeks following your hair transplant, the transplanted hair will start to fall out. Most patients will notice new growth within six to nine months. For a few months, the transplanted hair may not seamlessly match the surrounding hair.

Sarasota, FL Hair Transplant Procedure FAQs

Due to the highly customizable nature of Hair Transplant procedures, each individual’s needs and aesthetic goals will determine the cost. Dr. Hamwi will provide an estimate for a more accurate hair transplant cost in Sarasota, FL during your complimentary consultation.

During your Hair Transplant procedure, you’ll be anesthetized, and you’ll be given pain medication to take in the following days. Be sure to address your pain concerns with Dr. Hamwi during your consultation.

Ideal candidates for hair transplants are physically healthy men and women who don’t smoke and have experienced thinning hair or baldness due to natural causes or have experienced balding due to scalp injuries. However, hair transplants may not be suitable for everyone. Non-ideal candidates have experienced hair loss due to:

  • widespread thinning and baldness
  • medications or chemotherapy
  • thick scalp scars

Dr. Hamwi will let you know your ideal hair restoration options when you meet with him in a consultation.

The initial recovery from FUE hair transplant takes three to five days. You won’t have any incisions or stitches, but you will have small scabs throughout the donor area of your scalp. Following your Sarasota FUE hair transplant, you may experience redness, which should resolve in four to 12 weeks.

After two weeks, grafts should be secure in their new location. However, full healing from your FUE can take between six months to a year, and it may be up to 18 months before you experience new growth.

In most cases, FUE hair restoration requires shaving your hair very short. Typically, it takes hair about 10 to 14 days to grow out. Some people are suitable for a technique that doesn’t require shaving before your procedure. Longer hair can help conceal the donor area.

Avoid wearing a hat for at least 10 to 14 days to prevent damaging to your grafts after your FUE hair transplant in Tampa. Wearing a hat can cause pressure on the head, damage the hair grafts, create empty patches on your scalp, and affect your overall results.

With long hair FUE, you can grow out the hair on the back and sides of your scalp before the procedure. On the day of your transplant, you can part your long hair in a way that allows us to shave inconspicuous bands of hair. The remaining longer hair can conceal the donor site.

While Dr. Hamwi takes all precautions to prevent scarring from FUE hair restoration, some amount of scarring will remain. Typically, new hair growth conceals the scarring that remains following FUE hair restoration, even with short haircuts. However, the scarring from an FUE hair transplant is less noticeable than a long linear scar from the strip method.

You can take some steps to conceal your hair transplant. First, make sure you take a few days off from work to heal from your procedure.

  • Gradually transition to a shorter hairstyle for a less drastic change.
  • Wear your hair longer to cover the donor area.
  • After 10 to 14 days, wear a loose-fitting hat.
  • Wash the donor area well as soon as your plastic surgeon allows and be sure to gently massage it to help loosen and remove scabs.
  • After at least two weeks, use volumizing products in your hair to help disguise donor areas.
  • Grow or change your facial hair as a distraction. People may pay more attention to the hair on your face than the top of your head.
  • Elect to have long hair FUE hair restoration that will allow you to keep your hair longer in areas other than the donor site.
